You might be thinking right now... What does an old bridge in Philadelphia have to do with a Zeele industrial dining table? Well, there is the obvious "industrial" connection and the use of metal and you would be correct in saying they look nothing alike... but there is definitely more with closer inspection. Read a little about my experience of Benjamin Franklin Bridge and make your own conclusions.
What is initially apparent is the sheer size of the bridge, and how it seems to float above the river. The delicate cables creates a repetitive vertical waveform. It towers over the surrounding buildings inspiring a feeling of grandeur, hope and new beginnings. It seems to say, “Hello, here I am!”
As an Australia, as many of you are too, you will understand my experience of awe at the idea that this bridge connects 2 cities, 2 states and 2 very different atmospheres. From Melbourne, the closest city is Geelong which is at least an hour away, not a 2 minute drive over a bridge. From Melbourne to get to the closest state, it is about a 5 hour drive.
A product of the American industrial revolution, the bridge is piece of history that hasn’t changed in aesthetic for over 90 years. Amidst its inertia, the cities on both sides have dramatically changed though the industrial style of the bridge has remained iconic and aesthetically appealing. It is a structure that continues to forms a functional part of everyday life of the 2 cities it connects with an average 100,000 vehicles crossing the bridge every day.
The engineering of suspension bridges is sophisticated, complex and allows for expansion over a large body of water. Other iconic suspension bridges are the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco and the Brooklyn Bridge in New York.
The bridge is made from 760,000 tons of structural steel, a material that is extremely strong under tension and highly resistant to the everyday wear and tear.
